Leon Robert Sienknecht, 82, of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Monday, October 5, 2009, at Westview Estates in Reinbeck, Iowa of natural causes. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, October 9, 2009, at Salem Church of Lincoln in Lincoln, Iowa, with Pastor Wade Ditty officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with the family present to greet friends at French Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established.

Leon Robert Sienknecht was born April 7, 1927, on the family farm, rural Gladbrook, Iowa, the son of Fred and Laura (Goettsch) Sienknecht. He attended country school and then graduated from Gladbrook High School. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee from May 1944 to July 1946 during World War II spending six weeks at Pearl Harbor and nine months on Okinawa. On June 1, 1947, Leon was united in marriage to Mary Lou Southard at Traer, Iowa.

After his discharge from the service he started City Service Station in Lincoln then joined his family as owners and operators of Sienknecht Brothers Truck Line, Sienknecht Truck Line, and then owned Lincoln Equipment Inc. After selling his business he began working for the Iowa Lottery. He was a life long resident of Lincoln until he moved to Westview Estates in Reinbeck. Leon was a member of Salem Church of Lincoln, charter member of Lincoln AMVETS Post #10; a member of American Legion Action Post #242 of Reinbeck, was Fire Chief of Lincoln for a number of years, past president of Lincoln Commercial club, charter member of Lincoln Lion's club and was President of Lincoln Centennial Committee.

He enjoyed fishing trips, camping, playing cards especially cribbage, trips to the casino, golfing, loved to sit down and do crossword puzzles, jig saw puzzles, sudoku and spend time with his family and friends.

Leon is survived by his daughter, Vickie Herink and her husband Larry of Lincoln,4 grandchildren; Heidi(Jed) Bergen of Sutton, NE, Lance Herink of Iowa Falls, Kristel (Matt) Howell of Waukee, IA, Tyler Sienknecht of Phoenix, AZ; 4 great- grandchildren; Wyatt and Jesse Bergen, Gabriella and Ava Howell; two sisters-in-laws, Opal Sienknecht and Mae Sienknecht; one daughter-in-law, Lynne Caltrider of Casey, Iowa

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife of 53 years; son, Kim in 1988; four brothers, Vincent, Clayton, Wayne and Arlo.
