Grundy Boy Killed in Hunting Accident
GRUNDY CENTER, IOWA — Robert Hawn, 13, of Grundy Center, was shot and wounded fatally, shortly after noon Sunday while hunting rabbits with his brother and a companion near here.
The youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Burgess Hawn, of Grundy Center, was hunting with his brother, LaVerne, 17, and Jack Stumberg, 16, also of Grundy Center.
Authorities said the youths frightened a rabbit from a pile of steel beams in the Rock Island railroad yards here at the north edge of Grundy Center and that when Stumberg fired at the animal the blast from his 410 caliber shotgun struck young Hawn in the back of the head.
The other two boys took the wounded youth to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital here, where he died a short time later.
Coroner Harold Engelkes ruled the shooting accidental.
Robert was born in Grundy Center October 2, 1944.
Surviving, besides his parents, are three brothers: Phillip, 19, Luverne, 17, and Douglas, 5.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Methodist church. The body will be taken to the church at noon from the Ferree Funeral Home.
