Rites Held For Mrs. S. E. Moats
Services were held at the Ivester Church of the Brethren Thursday, September 29, 1977 for Mrs. S. E. Moats, age 91. Mrs. Moats died Monday, September 26 at the Marshalltown Area Community Hospital East where she had been a patient for two days.
Rev. Berwyn Oltman of the Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren in Des Moines, officiated. Pallbearers were Dean, Marvin, Vernon and Carl Moats, David, Keith and Glenn Ferguson. Mrs. Howard Sheller and Mrs. Donald Butler sang "In The Garden", accompanied by Mrs. Howard Cakerice. Mrs. Glen Button and Mrs. Alfred Kruschwitz were floral attendants. Ushers were Clarence Slifer and Donald Butler. Burial was in the Sheller cemetery north of the church.
She was born April 14, 1886 in Hagerstown, Md., the daughter of James K. and Amanda Baer Thompson. She lived in Hagerstown during her youth. On June 10, 1916, she was united in marriage to S. E. Moats at Winona Lake, Ind. After their marriage they made their home on a farm in Melrose township, Grundy county, Iowa until 1950 when they moved into Grundy Center. Mr. Moats preceded his wife in death in January, 1951. She continued to make her home at 1102 F Avenue up to the time of her death. Mrs. Moats was a member of the Ivester Church of the Brethren.
Survivors are one son, Glen, rural Grundy Center, two daughters, Mrs. D. L. (Isabelle) Nuckolls of Paton and Mrs. Eldon (Cecel) Ferguson of Spirit Lake, also 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established. Arrangements were in charge of the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home.
Among relatives present were Mr. and Mrs. Willis Smith from Gaithersburg, Maryland who spent the rest of the week with the Lyle Nehers.
