Last Monday night the Fairfield creamery, owned by Fred Wells, took fire and burned to the ground. They have been using slack coal for fuel, and it took fire by spontaneous combustion. Before it was discovered the factory was also ablaze. The alarm was given by a neighbor, and Mr. and Mrs Wells, who live over the factory, had just time enough to escape from the burning building in their night clothing. The creamery building and machinery were entirely destroyed, and the loss, which is about $4,000, fails heavily upon Mr. Wells. He has, fortunately, insurance to the extent of $2,500 in the Hawkeye, which has the reputation of meeting its obligations promptly, and we anticipate that he will secure a settlement with the company without much delay.
