Deputy Sheriff Royce, of Cedar Falls, last Tuesday was passing along Main street with a prisoner when he was hailed by a Grundy county farmer named John Murphy. Royce stopped to see what was wanted, and Murphy without provocation seized him around the neck with one hand and with the other commenced pounding him over the head. The belligerent chap was arrested, taken before Squire Knapp, where he plead guilty to assault and was fined $30 and costs.
