Thank you for the quick response. In looking through pretty much every article today and a little extra research, I came across another marriage record for May (Mae) Emma - only this one takes place in Esthersville, Emmet IA to a John Harrison Shiley on 27 Aug 1904.
On this record it states that her maiden name is McGreggan - in the Iowa Index, I also found that her parents are listed as Malvan and Elizabeth (probably Melvin and Elizabeth Ridenour of Paton) ... in the newspapers from Green Co - it shows a few times that Mrs. Harry Shiley came to visit E. Ridenour... a few others it lists her as May (McGuiggan various spellings) Shiley.
William didn't die until 1926- The 3 kids were raised in Saint Joseph's Orphanage in Wabasha, MN. I've ordered William's Birth Certificate from MN. I just hope I've got the right one.
I also found May's Obit, which says that she was married to William. I just have to say it's all so confusing.... the family story was she went crazy and jumped in a well... Who knows.
None of this explains why she's buried with her maiden name.
