Robert Lyle Swedlund was born April 23, 1929 at the Boone County Hospital, Boone, Iowa. He was the son of Floyd and Alfnild (Ollie) Stromberg Swedlund.
Bob graduated from Stratford High School in 1946 and farmed with his father until 1950. Bob enlisted in the Iowa Air National Guard on December 1, 1950 and was on active duty from April 1, 1951 to December 1, 1952.
On December 6, 1953, Bob married Beverly Jay from Boone at the Marion Street Methodist Church in Boone, Iowa. The couple farmed south of Stratford until 1961 when they moved to a farm north of Webster City. Bob served as field assessor for Hamilton County. He was also on the Farm Bureau membership committee.
In 1962, Bob and Beverly moved to Paton where Bob worked as a DX oil jobber for three and a half years. Then, Bob accepted a position at Community State Bank in Paton where he worked for 20 years, retiring as a bank director in 2003. Bob was also a real estate broker for over 30 years.
Through the years, Bob was appointed to the Greene County Board of Review, serving for five years. He was also elected to the Greene County Board of Education. He was a member of Lions Club, and Gem Lodge 429 of Paton where he had served as treasurer.
Bob was a life long member of the United Methodist Church, serving on church boards at the Marion Street Methodist Church in Stratford and Salem United Methodist Church at Paton.
Bob died November 28, 2010 at his home in Jefferson, Iowa. He was 81 years of age. Preceding him in death were his parents, Floyd and Ollie Swedlund, and a brother, Dale. Survivors include his wife, Beverly, of Jefferson, IA; two daughters: Linda Bills and her husband Tracy of Jefferson, IA, and Shari Swedlund and Rick Whitten of Ogden, IA; three grandchildren: Bob and wife Nicole of Scranton, IA; Sarah and fiancé Eric of Denver, CO; and Michael of Jefferson, IA; and two great grandchildren, Adam and Ryan; a sister, Doris Swedlund of Carmichael, CA.
Funeral Services were at 10:00 am Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the Salem United Methodist Church in Paton. Visitation was after 11:00 am Tuesday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Memorials were to the Greene County Medical Center Foundation or the Salem United Methodist Church.
