OBITUARY - JOHN MELVIN NEWMAN
Osceola Democrat, Osceola, IA
November, 1916

John Melvin Newman, an old and respected resident of Osceola, died at his home in north Osceola Saturday, November 4, at 6:30 a.m. Mr. Newman was a member of the Christian Church of Osceola and as a member of that body was held in kindest regards by those who knew him best. Interment was made in Dawson Cemetery near Perry, Iowa, and funeral services were held from his late home Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock by Revs. Leonard and Munyon.

Mr. Newman was born in Louisa County, Iowa, August 22, 1859. He was the son of J.M. and Minerva Newman. On the fifth day of February, 1882, he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Crabb of Greene County, Iowa. To this union, four children, all of whom are living and present at the services Monday night. They are: Mrs. Carl Dare of Des Moines, Mrs. Clyde Wilson of Des Moines, Mrs. John Richter, and the only son Howard, who resides at El Paso, Texas. Besides these he is survived by a brother, William P. Newman of Des Moines, and a sister, Mrs. Neut. Edwards of *Ripley (sic), Iowa.

November, 1916

John Melvin Newman, son of J.M. and Minerva Newman, was born in Louisa County, Iowa, August 22, 1859, and died at his home in this city Saturday, November 4, 1916, aged 57 years, 2 months and 22 days after an illness of several months.

Mr. Newman was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Crabb in Greene County on February 5, 1882. To this union four children were born, three daughters and one son, Mmes, Carl Dare and Clyde Wilson of Des Moines, Mrs. John Richter, and Howard who resides at El Paso, Texas. Besides the family he leaves one brother, W.P. Newman of Des Moines, and a sister, Mrs. Newt. Edwards of *Ripley(sic), Iowa.

Mr. Newman was a member of the christian Church of our city and as a member of that body was held in kindest regards by those who knew him best.

The funeral was held at the late home Monday evening at 7:30 in charge of Revs. Leonard and Munyon.

The body accompanied by the undertaker, L.W. Webster, was taken to Dawson, Iowa, on No. 10 Tuesday morning, while the wife and children, the three sons-in-law, the brother and wife, also Mr. Richey and Mrs. Cowan of Des Moines, drove by auto to the place of burial.
