SCRANTON JOURNAL, Thursday, January 24, 1935

"J.M." Kimball, former well known and very highly esteemed Scranton citizen, died at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, last Thursday. He was nearly 85 years of age. His body was brought to Scranton for burial in the family lot in the Scranton cemetery, the remains arriving Saturday night at midnight accompanied by his son Otto Kimball. They were taken to the Huffman Funeral Home, where funeral services were held Monday at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.S. Ellis, pastor at the Methodist church. Mr. Kimball was an upright citizen and a man who performed well the duties which fell to his lot. He was well and favorably known in the Scranton community a score of years ago, and old friends here, while mourning the passing of a neighbor and friend whom they admired for many sterling qualities, rejoice in the fact that he was permitted to live a long and fruitful life and fully complete its work. Mr. Kimball was a man of keen intellect and always made an indelible impression upon those with whom he came in contact. The Journal loses an old and valued friend in his passing, and joins with a multitude of others in extending profound sympathy to those whom his death bereaves.

James Marshall Kimball, the 5th in a family of six children, was born in Troy Lakes, Walworth County, Wisconsin May 10, 1850. In 1854 his parents moved to Greene County in the same state, and two years later to Jones (Co.) farm until the age of nineteen he learned the trade of a printer. On March 16, 1876 he was married to Rowena Lewis. The couple resided on a Jones county, Iowa farm utnil 1887 when they moved to Greene County, Iowa and purchased a farm near Scranton, where they lived until Mrs. Kimball's death in 1908. To this union three children were born: Zoe, who died in infancy; Otto, now of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Leo, who passed away at Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 45 years. In 1911 he went to live with a sister and brother in the old homestead of his childhood. Here he outlived his sister and brother, being the sole survivor of the family. In October 1926, he went to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he made his home with his son until his death of January 17, 1935, at the ripe old age of 84 years, 8 months and 7 days. His remains were brought to Scranton and laid beside his wife in the Scranton cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss, his son Otto, and two granddaughters Viva Huffman of Des Moines, and Mona Cantlin of Casper, Wyoming.
