THE REPORTER, CHURDAN, GREENE COUNTY, IOWA - FRIDAY, MAY 23, 1924
HANNIBAL P. BRODY

Hannibal P. Brody was born in Cass County, Michigan, March 1st, 1837. He was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Adaline Jones, January 8, 1862, and in the autumn of 1862 they came to Iowa and located on a tract of land just south of where Linden now stands and on this farm they raised a family of ten children, five boys and five girls. Two of these died in infancy and the other eight grew to manhood and to womanhood. Those living are Mrs. Denna White and Mrs. Mollie Godfrey of Linden, and Fred of Ocheydan, Floyd of Churdan and Guy of South Dakota.

During his early life, the school system in Michigan was almost nothing as compared with that of today, hence his education so far as books and classics are concerned was very meager; yet he was a man of good intellect and very aggressive in spirit and took great interest in the organizing of good school systems in this part of the county for the public good, as well as for the benefit of his own family.

In 1892 while the Christian church was being built in Linden he and his wife and a part of their children united with the church as charter members and he has always been considered an honorable and worthy member, not only of the church but of the entire community. After the death of his wife, which occurred October 14, 1910, he continued to make his home in Linden, where he could continue his favorite work, which was that of a veterinarian, and right in the center of a community where he had been thus engaged for many years, and being unusually strong and active for a man of his age, he was kept quite busy the greater part of his time.

Among his friends are ten or twelve boys in Linden in whom he has always taken great interest. The boys often gathered of evenings at his home just to hear him sing for them and to tell about his early life among the Indians and his adventures as a boy in hunting and other amusements such as carroms and other interesting but harmless pastimes such as almost every boy enjoys—especially when he is being entertained in the home of a man they have learned to love and call "grandpa" because of the loyal friendship he had shown to them and often before he would let the boys depart for their home he would show them his high ideals and esteem for true noble manhood which he wanted them all to attain and for them always to be truthful, honest and industrious and useful wherever they should be.

His death occurred in Linden May 4, 1924, at the ripe old age of 87 years, 2 months and 8 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church in Linden May 6, at 2 o’clock, by Rev. R. A. Lefis, assisted by Rev. A. C. Burnham and Rev. J. B. Speaker, who is the pastor of the church. They were largely attended by relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery east of Panora, beside those of his wife and children. -- Guthrie Co. Vedette, Panora, Iowa.
