JESSE PATRICK
Jesse Patrick, son of Jesse and Elizabeth Patrick was born in Greenwich, Cumberland county, New Jersey on July 15, 1850 and departed this life at his home in Churdan, April 19, 1923, of heart disease. He had been in poor health for several years. No cause for immediate alarm was realized until he was confined to his bed about a week before his death. In his youth he united with the Canton Baptist church. In the year of 1880 he came west and located on a farm in Boone county. He was united in marriage to Sarah Haltom September 23, 1885, and made their home on a farm in Hardin township, Greene county, Iowa, remaining there until 1903 when he moved to Churdan remaining in town for three years, but naturally of a very industrious disposition he again resumed farm life for about three years, when he again returned to his home in Churdan remaining there until his death. He leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife and two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Clipperton and Mrs. Elizabeth Clipperton, four grandchildren, one brother, of Boone and three sisters and a host of friends. In the death of Mr. Patrick, Churdan and vicinity losses a valuable and patriotic citizen, strictly honest, his integrity unquestioned. Believing and practicing the golden rule always, steadfast for right principles for home, church, temperance and state. He believed true merit is based on what a man really is and that financial gain should be the result of honest labor and toil and with the aid of his wife had made ample provision for his loved ones. Again we bow in humble submission to God, Who doeth all things well and say goodbye for the present to him whom we respected and admired. The funeral service was held at the Baptist church of which he was a member, Sunday afternoon, Rev. Yearnd, of Perry was called to preach the sermon. A large congregation was present which attested to the high regard and respect the community had for the deceased. The floral offerings were beautiful. His body was laid to rest in the Churdan cemetery. Out of town relatives were: Mr. Patrick of Boone, Mr. Haltom and daughter of Rockwell City.

JESSE & SARAH HALTOM PATRICK

Jesse E. Patrick, son of Jesse and Elizabeth Patrick, was born in Greenwich, Cumbleland County, New Jersey, July 15, 1850. In 1880 he came west and settled on a farm in Boone County. He was a fisherman, as was his family before coming to Iowa.

In 1885 he was married to Sarah Elizabeth Haltom, daughter of Elijah and Elizabeth Haltom of Panora in Guthrie County. Haltoms trace their ancestry to Haltom Castle [the manor on the hill] in Rincorn, England, in 1033, where they held high position. Sarah's father, Elijah, was born in 1812 in North Carolina and moved to Indiana in 1824. He married Elizabeth Beaman at the age of 21. They were the parents of 13 children. The two youngest were born after they moved to Warren County, Iowa. Sarah, the youngest daughter, was born in 1856. The family moved to a Guthrie County farm in 1858, being among the first settlers. The parents moved to Panora for a while and then moved to Greene County to live near their youngest daughter, Sarah, and family.

Jesse and Sarah made their home on a farm in Hardin Township until 1903, when the family moved to Churdan. They were the parents of two daughters, Lillie Iris Patrick Clipperton [August 4, 1886], and Elizabeth [Lizzie] May Patrick Clipperton [May 9, 1889]. They lived in the house where Bessie Rees now lives, for three years. Tiring of town life they moved to the farm one mile north of Churdan, where the Ron Toliver family has been living. They lived there for about three years and then they moved back to their home in Churdan.

The family looked forward to weekend trips to southwest of Rockwell City to visit Sarah's brother, his wife and three daughters. Those long trips by team and wagon were great events in their lives. Other entertainment included visiting between neighbors, barn raisings, quilting bees, box socials, and churches and schools were important in their lives.

After the death of Jesse in 1923, Sarah married I. I. Pierce and continued to make her home in Churdan until her death in 1933.

After finishing school, Lillie worked as a dressmaker and work with a French lady who had a millinery shop in Churdan and learned to make hats.

On February 23, 1910, Lillie married B. Bly Brody and they made their home on a farm southeast of Churdan and later northeast of town until the death of Bly in 1918. They were the parents of one son, Wayne Wesley Brody. Wayne remembers riding on horseback with his dad to go after cattle across the creek on the Joe Tower's farm.

Lillie and Wayne moved to Churdan where Lillie worked in Granger's Variety Store.
