More tidbit info that might give you some leads
In 1836, Iowa became a part of Wisconsin Territory, and VanScyoc was here. Oh, yes, he probably would have been living somewhere in eastern Iowa.
Two years later, Iowa became Iowa Territory, with its capital at Burlington. One year later it was moved to Iowa City.
In 1840, commerce was quite well established, and VanScyoc probably was making a living without any government help. This is also the year that he and his first wife had a child (Franklin, who was 16 in 1856.).....Margaret, born circa 1846, must have been Franklin's full sister, because their step mother would have been but 11 years old, herself....I have never tried to find where these two children were when the 1850 Federal Census was taken.
Now, we come Ashville's second wife, Sarah Ann, who told the 1856 census enumerator that she came to the state in 1846. There seems to be no clue was to where they were married--except in that part of Iowa which was settled by 1846.....That leaves out most of the middle portion of Iowa.....etc...etc....
Note: This writer asserts Sarah Ann was a second without any basis or proof offered for this. A marriage record was found in Holt Co., Mo in 1845 showing the names Ashben Van Syhawk or Syhowk and Sarah Ann Farley.
.....Bone up on Wauhob's ferry (Use the SEARCH space).
Note: strangly this is one item I have been unable to find any definitive information on; with it also is the theory that this VanScyoc helped build one of the covered bridges. No proof of this yet.
Then replace the ferry with VanScyoc's covered bridge, and you have Ashville living in Monroe township, which covered in 1856 a large part of northeastern quarter of Fremont county
