CARMAN, Mahala Ferguson

I have a bit of a puzzle with birth year of Mahala Ferguson, dau. of Joseph Ferguson and Hiantha Fickes. Recent information indicates she was born around 1892. Earlier census and family records state she was born 11 September 1875 in Minnesota.

Can anyone tell me why there is such a discrepancy in the birth dates?

Mahala married Thomas Carman.
