Mrs. Cowles Obituary,

Martha Elizabeth Chaney, eldest daughter of J. Clark and Sarah Chaney, was born near Hamburg, Ia, November 5 1863 and departed this life at her home in Riverton, Ia, July 30, 1937, aged 71 years, 11 months and 25 days. She was truly a Fremont county pioneer, having lived all of her life here except, but about three years, when she went with her parents to Kansas when a small child.

She was united in marriage December 29, 1886 to James H. Cowles. To this union four children were born, one son and three daughters, the son and one daughter preceding the mother in death. In 1885, she gave her heart to God, joined the Baptist church and lived a consistent christian life, ever ready to do her part in both church and social activities, until health failed her. She commanded the love and respect of all who knew her. Although deprived of the pleasure of mingling with neighbors and friends in church and social activities for some time, she was always cheerful and made life as pleasant as possible for her family and shedding the same bright rays of kindness to neighbors and friends who will miss her greatly. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a true friend, and a kind and helpful neighbor, she has passed on to her reward. She is survived by her husband, two children, Mrs. Rose Smith of Hamburg, and Mrs. Lena Story of Laramie, Wyo., eleven grandchildren, three brothers, John H. Chaney, Stuart, Nebr, W Harvey Chaney, Holbrook, Nebr, Nick Chaney, Eddysville, Nebr and four sisters, Mrs. Nancy Fredinburg of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Mrs W.C. Peterson of Geneva, Nebr., Mrs. T.D. Manrose of Brock, Nebr. and Mrs P.M. Khuntz of Oakland, California and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in Riverton, Ia. August 1, at the M.E. Church at 2pm, by Rev. Gilbert Hutchinson, paster of the First Baptist church and the Rev. D.N. Gillett, both of Hamburg.
