Frederick H. Gardner was born 67 years ago in Indiana but came to Iowa with his parents when quite small. When a young man he came to this community where he has spent practically all of his life.

In 1889, he was married to Miss Eunice McCluskey at the home of his sister, Mrs. Emma Adamson, and it was in her home that his life ended. Three children were born to this couple, Alvin Gardner of Thurman, Mrs. Nellie Jenkins of Hamburg and Helen Gardner who passed on four years ago. The wife and mother passed away six years ago.

Following the death of both his wife and daughter, he continued to live on his farm just west of Thurman until last spring when he began suffering from heart trouble. During the summer, while visiting his children, he improved enough that he planned, after spending the winter with his sister and brother, to go back in March to his own home. Wednesday afternoon a young team he was driving became frightened and ran away. Mr. Gardner was able to soon bring them under control but it is thought the excitement was too much and after retiring for the night he slipped quietly away. He was not found until he failed to answer the call for breakfast, when his aged sister entered his room and found he had answered another call during the night.

Besides his two children he leaves three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister and four brothers, George of Thurman, Charles of Colfax, Sam and Doss of Barney, Iowa
Funeral services were held Friday at the Methodist church, with Rev. Clark Howard of Tabor in charge. Interment was made beside his wife in Thurman cemetery.
