Ulyssis Grant Beam, son of Jacob and Violetta Beam, was born March 17, 1864 at Howard county, Iowa and died at his home in Riverton on May 26, 1941, following a heart attack, at the age of 77 years.

He came to Riverton at the age of six years, and spent the remainder of his life in this vicinity, with the exception of ten years in Nebraska. While residing there he was married to Matilda Kate Worrell. They had four sons and three daughters. Two children died in infancy, and one daughter, Gretchen Wilson, died in 1934. Mr. Beam had been a member of the Presbyterian church for over 40 years.

Those who survive him are his wife; three sons, Sidney of Coburg, Leslie of Sidney, Raymond of Riverton, one daughter, Mrs. Naomi Gardner of Riverton; 12 grand children and one great-great grandchild, four brothers, Horton and Wilbur of Riverton, Fred of Omaha, Irwin of Woodard, Ia.; five sisters, Mrs. Stella Huffman, Lyman, Colo., Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Plattsmouth, Nebr., Mrs. Mary Strait of Peru, Nebr., Mrs. Fannie Barker of Shenandoah, and Mrs. Ellen Barker of Altamont, Mo.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Riverton on Wednesday afternoon, May 28, with the Rev. O.A. Douglass of Randolph officiating, assisted by Rev. H.D. Butts. Mrs. Leslie Johnson, Mrs. Ellis Broughton, W. Stubbs and Lee Edwards sang the selections "Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle" accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Wm. Stubbs. Mrs. Broughton also sang a solo, "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be." Mrs. Walter Bridgeford, Mrs. Reid Jones, Mrs. Elwyn Kish, and Mrs. Ordie Scoles were in charge of flowers at the church. Pall bearers were Floyd Ward, Clifford Beam, Orval Duncan, Elwyn Kish, Reid Jones and Ordie Scoles. Interment was in Mount Zion cemetery south of Riverton.
