Obituary of Mrs. P. M. Johnson

Abbie Rumery, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Rumery was born October 28 1858, at Wyoming, Jones County, Iowa. Where she resided the first eight years of her life. In 1867 her parents moved to Fremont County where she has lived ever since, attending Hampton school five miles southeast of Randolph, and here she grew to womanhood, loved and liked by all who knew her. On October 30, 1876, she married P. M. Johnson to whom she made a faithful wife and a loving mother to the ten children born to them. There remain seven of these children to mourn her loss, two having died in infancy, and Mrs. Charles Bateman, who died October 18, as a result of influenza.

In the fall of 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Randolph. Mr. Johnson died February 27, 1911, leaving her with the entire responsibility for the family.

She lived a noble Christian life, having united with the Presbyterian church at Anderson in 1887, and then May 14, 1914, uniting with the Presbyterian church in Randolph where she has been a most faithful worker. The church will miss her as one of the most faithful members and worker.

Just when she had plans all made to move to Lincoln where her daughter, Ida was to attend school, she was called to her home beyond. She was suddenly killed Jun 16, 1920 while helping remove stock from one of the store buildings during the recent fire and was buried under the debris when the front of the building suddenly fell, due to an explosion.

Left to mourn her loss are the following children; Mrs. Clara Inman, Mrs. Maud Bateman, R. P. Johnson, Mrs. Maggie Auckenbaugh, T. D. Johnson, Mrs. Violet Needham, Miss Ida Johnson. All the children live in or near the vicinity. In addition to these there are the following brothers and sisters; Albert Rumery of Litchfield, Nebr.; Anna M. Reed of Rosalie, Nebr.; Nora R. Kidder of Fremont, Nebr.; Lucretia I. Jarrad of Van Tassel Wyoming; George W., and Herbert Rumery of Sidney; Sarah R. Throckmarton of Lincoln, Nebr.; Susie C. Sims of Mason City, Nebr.; Cecelia Nushaum of Arnold, Nebr. All the brothers and sisters were at the funeral except Annie M. Reed and Cecelia Nushaum.

Mrs. Johnson will always be remembered as a woman of sterling Christian qualities, a hard worker, a loving wife and mother, and one who always sacrificed herself for the sake of her loved ones, and those who needed help.

Truly she has lived the life of sacrifice and service. The highest tribute that can be paid to any life is that, that person has been a servant of all. The highest tribute that can be paid to Mrs. Johnson was paid by one of the men, who on hearing of her sudden death said. “She has died just as she lived, trying to help someone else.” Christ said, “He who would be great among you, let him be the servant of all.” Truly Mrs. Johnson will be great among us.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, music was furnished by a quartet composed of Miss Ethel Rhode, Mrs. Wallace Dodd, Frank and George Kilpatrick, with Mrs. Lola Thomas at the piano.

The pall bearers were Messrs Charles Edson, Joseph Fitcher, M. O. Inman, John Bateman and Bert Gard.

Eight young ladies acted as flower girls. The floral offerings were many and beautiful showing the high esteem in which Mrs. Johnson was held. The business men of Randolph presented a large wreath to show their appreciation and honor for her supreme sacrifice.

The body was laid to rest in the Randolph cemetery by the side of her loved ones who have gone on before.
