August 5, 1943:Hold Services for Ira Glasgow
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, August 1, at the Presbyterian church at Sidney for Ira Glasgow, 60, who died at Seattle, Wash., Friday, July 23rd. Services were conducted by Rev. Cecil Wells. Interment was made in the Singleton cemetery east of Sidney.
Mr. Glasgow had gone to Washington about three months ago, and began working in the Tacoma & Seattle Shipyards, at Seattle. He met his death by accident in an elevator shaft while at his work. He was killed instantly.
Ira Glasgow, son of Presley and Martha Glasgow, was born April 6, 1874, in Fremont county, at the old home place east of Sidney, near the Walnut Creek bottom. He grew to manhood here. Later he took up the trade of blacksmithing.
April 9, 1900, he was united in marriage to Mary Anna Cahill of Athbuoy, Ireland. To this union eleven children were born, all of whom are living. They are Presley James, of Sidney; Mrs. R. W. Bills, of Kansas City, Mo; Steven of Ft. Laramie, Wyo.; Eugene of Thurman; Walter Ira of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Carl Holland of Sidney; Mrs. Floyd Glade, of Ft. Laramie, Wyo.; Mrs. Irwin Rist of Eatonville, Wash.; Howard of Fort Ord, Calif.; Floyd, somewhere in the Hawaiian Islands; Mrs. Glen Hobbs, of Omaha.
He is also survived by his wife, 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Ellis of Anderson and Albert of Omaha; two sisters, Rose Ann of Langdon, Mo.; and Amanda of Lincoln, Neb. One brother and one sister preceded him in death. They were Steve of Spokane, Wash., and Elizabeth of Chattanooga, Tenn.
He spent some 20 years living in the state of Nebraska, later moving back to Iowa. He had spent the last few months visiting in the home of his daughter at Eatonville, Wash., where he passed away.
Mr. Glasgow was a man of few words and made friends wherever he went. He loved musci and played the violin, making several for his children and grandchildren, which they cherish.
