Hampton, Ia., March 1 - Death has claimed two more of this county's pioneers during the past few days, the first being George A. Pettis, who died at the age of 79 years. From New York, where he was born, he came with his parents to Ohio, thence to Fulton, Ill., where in 1860, he enlisted in the Firty-sixth Illinois infantry [sic - should be either Fifty-sixth or Forty-sixth]. March 20, 1864, he was united in marriage to Louisa C. Wright. Since 1867 the couple had resided in Franklin county. To them were born six girls and three boys. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C.H. Nicol and interment was in the Old Chapin cemetery.
