Chapin - Funeral services were to he held Tuesday for James Coughlain Lumley, 88, one of Franklin county's oldest residents, who died at his home in Hampton Saturday. Rites were to be at the Johnson funeral home in Hampton at 2:30 p.m. with burial in the family lot in the old Chapin cemetery.

Mr. Lumley, son of Coughlain and Fannie Lumley, was born at Novia Scotia, Canada, Feb. 14, 1857, and came to Iowa when but a small boy with his widowed mother, sisters and brothers, and located west of Chapin. During the most of his life time he was engaged in farming except for 3 years at Tencup, Colo., where he was engaged in mining. He returned to this vicinity by covered wagon in 1885.

Like many of the old settlers he helped to improve acres of timber land witnessing the growth and development of this county from trackless prairies and woods to one of the best agricultural sections of Iowa. He moved from his farm west of Chapin to Hampton in 1914.

He was married Dec. 31, 1881 [year hard to read], at Chapin, to Alice Irene Crawford who died 16 years ago. To this union was born 7 daughters and 2 sons. They are Mrs. Frances Woodward and Mrs. Grace Woodward of Mason City; Mrs. Goldie Crawford, Mrs. Iva Miller and Ray L. Lumley, all of Hampton; Mrs. Amber Froning of Chapin; Mrs. Rosa VonEpps of Rockwell and Mrs. Maude Zeeiger [sic] of Sheffield. A son, Gideon Lumley, died in infancy.

Mr. Lumley was married to Mrs. Myra Brockman at Guthrie Center May 20, 1930, who with his children and 20 grandchildren survives. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic lodge and the Modern Woodman of America.
