Funeral services for John Fred Hapney, 89 of Dows were held from the Willim Funeral Home in Dows on Saturday, November 17, 1984 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial was in the Tom Oleson Cemetery in Franklin County, Iowa.

Fred died on Thursday, November 15, 1984 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

He was born in Illinois on February 27, 1895 and was the son of Ira and Nancy Uterback Hapney. The family moved to Dows when he was 18. They later moved to Highmore, South Dakota. He farmed around the Highmore area for two years. He then moved to Detroit and worked for Henry Ford for several years, returning to Dows where he farmed until he retired in the early 60's.

He was united in marriage to Julia Oleson on November 3, 1915 at Popejoy, Iowa. She died on September 3, 1966. Before entering the hospital in Hampton, he had resided at the Dows Care Center for the past year.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows. Survivors include three sisters: Mrs. Iona Alumbaugh of Cameron, Missouri; Mrs Margaret Charlson of Highmore, South Dakota and Mrs. Edith Galster of Rapid City, South Dakota; two sisters-in-law: Marie Azeltine of Hampton and Gladys Hapney of Harrold, South Dakota and one brother-in-law, Edgar Frier of Highmore, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and three sisters.
