J. H. Tobias Dies After Extended Illness
Was Long Time Resident of Franklin County
J. H. Tobias, well known resident of Franklin county for many years and a resident of Latimer since 1913, died at the Lutheran hospital in Hampton from heart disease yesterday, February 1st. Mr. Tobias had been in failing health for the last year and had been confined to the hospital for the last month. Funeral services will be conducted at the Mrs. A. P. Millett home tomorrow, Friday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Hampton cemetery, with service at the grave in charge of members of Anchor Lodge, A.F. & A. M., of which the deceased was a member.
James Harvey Tobias was born July 13, 1860, at Hamburg, Pennsylvania. He moved to Wisconsin with his parents when a small boy, and at the age of fourteen years he moved to Franklin county, Iowa where he had since made his home. As a lad, Mr. Tobias engaged in farm work in the vicinity of Hampton, where he attained a man's estate. He married to Miss Clara E. Carpenter, of Galena, Illinois on March 2, 1893, and they located on a farm north of Hampton, where they resided for many years. In 1913, the couple retired from the active life of the farm and moved to Latimer.
Mr. Tobias always took an active interest in the business, civic and political affairs of his home community and he was regarded as one of the real community builders of Franklin county. He served as member of the Latimer school board, member of the Latimer town council and mayor of Latimer at various times during the last several years. He was a member of the Masonic order and had held all of the offices in Anchor lodge.
The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. J. H. Tobias, of Latimer, and by one daughter, Mrs. Carrell O. Turner, of East St. Louis, Illinois. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Emma Rickard, whose home is in Arkansas; Mrs. isaac Frederick, of Witchita, Kansas, and Mrs. A. H. Cunningham, of Kansas City, Kansas.
