Private Ned L. Clock of Hampton Dies of Typhoid Fever at Chickamauga
The Des Moines Register of yesterday morning contains a special from Hampton dated Monday which says:
"Private Ned L. Clock, Company D, 52nd Iowa, who died of typhoid fever at Chickamauga last Friday was buried here today, the funeral services being at the home of his father, E.L. Clock, in Reeve township, the attendance being very large. This is the second death in the company from typhoid fever, and three more of the company are dangerously sick with the same disease.
"There is a widespread feeling here that our boys are not getting the care they should have at Chickamauga, and especially that they are compelled to use impure water when good water from Crawfish Springs is but a few miles away, and the parents of the boys are anxious that they be moved to some other locality.
"The deceased is supposed to have been a nephew of the H.A. Clock who was formerly a resident of this place. The latter had an accident recently at his home in Hampton while handling a shot gun, as a result of which he loses [sic] two fingers of his right hand and has a mangled hand which will require some time to heal up."
