James R. Niven, 78, retired, of 5701 Lemon Ave. died yesterday in a Long Beach hospital. He was born in Hampton, Iowa, and came from Sioux City to Long Beach in 1942.

He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Parish. Surviving are the widow, Elizabeth; a son, Joseph M., of Sioux City, a sister, Mrs. Belle Griggs, of Sioux City, and two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

The rosary will be recited tonight at 7:30 in Sheelar-McFadyen Chapel. Mass of requiem will be offered at 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Athanasius Church. Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery.
