"Mrs. Lewis Shroyer Among Those Who Saw County Develop from Prairie
"Mrs. Lewis Shroyer died at her home, three miles south of Hampton, last Friday, January 13, 1922, after an illness of several months duration. Mrs. Shroyer was one of the early settlers in this comunity, coming here over sixty years ago with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Jones. She made a host of friends during her lifetime here, they being numbered only by her acquaintances.
"Mrs. Joan Jones Shroyer was born on May 7, 1834, in Taylor county, Virginia, at which place she lived until she was four years of age when she moved to Delaware county, Indiana, with her parents. In 1854 in company with her parents she moved to Iowa, locating first in Buchanan county, a year later moving to Franklin county and settling at Maysville.
"On November 2nd, 1856, she was united in marriage to Lewis Shroyer, and for several years they lived at Maysville. In the spring of 1865 they moved to the farm shouth of Hampton where they both lived for the remainder of their days, Mrs. Shroyer continuing her residence there after the death of her husband on October 22, 1906. It is interesting to note that the farm on which Mr. and Mrs. Shroyer spent the greater part of their lives and which is now owned by their son, Martin L. Shroyer, is just about one-half mile north of the old homestead of Mrs. Shroyer's parent, at which place she was married so many years before in a little old log cabin.
"Mrs. Shroyer is survived by two sons, D. W. Shroyer and Martin L. Shroyer, and one daughter, Mrs. James A. Green, all of whom reside in Hampton and vicinity. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilton, of Princeton, Idaho, and one brother, M. B. Jones, of Hampton. One son, Victor S. Shroyer, preceded his mother in death, on August 10, 1914.
"Funeral services were held at the home at 1:00 o'clock, Monday afternoon with Rev. Dewitt Clinton, of Iowa Falls, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. W. G. Crowder, of this city. Interment was made in the Hampton cemetery."FRANKLIN COUNTY RECORDER, Hampton, Iowa, Wednesday, January 18, 1922:
"Mrs. Lewis Shroyer Passes Away
"Pioneer Woman Claimed By Death Following Lingering Illness. Funeral Services Held Monday Afternoon.
"Mrs. Joan Shroyer, widow of Lewis Shroyer, succumbed to the final summons Friday, Jan. 13, 1922, at her home three miles south of Hampton, following an illness of several months duration. Her death marked the closing of a long and useful life, the end coming at the age of nearly 88 years from a complication of ailments.
"Joan Jones Shroyer, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Jones, pioneer residents of this community, was born in Taylor county, Virginia, May 7, 1834, and when four years of age moved with her parents to Delaware county, Indiana. In 1854 the family emigrated to Iowa, settling first in Buchanan county and the following year came to Franklin county, locating near Maysville. On November 2, 1856, the deceased was joined in wedlock to Lewis Shroyer, the marriage ceremony being performed in a log cabin on the Jones homestead less than one-half mile south fo the place where the couple spent the greater part of their married life and where death claimed both. The husband, Lewis Shroyer, was also one of the early pioneers of this county, coming here in 1855 and working for two years at his trade of carpenter and in 1857 formed a partnership with his brother, William J. Shroyer, and together they operated a sawmill on Maynes creek near what is known as the Amos Sheppard home.
"In the spring of 1865 Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Shroyer moved to their farm south of town and here the husband died on October 22, 1906, just twelve days previous to their golden wedding anniversary for which occasion they had made plans to celebrate. Since the husband's death, the widow has continued to live on the old homestead which her son, Martin L. Shroyer, purchased.
"Impressive funeral services were held at the home at one o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. DeWitt Clinton, of Iowa Falls, assisted by Rev. W. G. Crowder, after which all that was mortal of this grand old mother in Israel was tenderly conveyed to our silent city of the dead where burial was made in the family lot.
"The deceased is survived by two sons, D. W. and Martin L. Shroyer, and one daughter, Mrs. James Green, all residents of this community. One son, Victor Shroyer, passed away August 10, 1814 (sic). She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilton, of Princeton, Idaho, and a brother, M. B. Jones, of this city, and ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren."
