THE HAMPTON CHRONICLE, March 26, 1942, page 13:
"Final Rites Held for J. H. Switzer
"Longtime Resident of County Buried at Old Chapin
"Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, at the George Menning home, at Hampton, for J. H. Switzer, age seventy-nine, who died there last Monday. Rev. W. C. Cleworth, pastor of the Methodist church, in Hampton, was in charge of the final rites, and burial was made in the Old Chapin cemetery. Mr. Switzer had lived with his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Menning, for the past few years.
"Mr. Switzer was born in Ontario, Canada, May 15, 1862. He came with his parents to Franklin county, in 1866, and they settled on one of the Mott farms, five miles east of Hampton. Later Mr. Switzer's father bought a farm in Grant township and the family moved there.
"J. H. Switzer was married in 1866 to Miss Elizabeth Bayliss, who died in March, 1935. They were the parents of eight children, Mrs. George Menning, of Hampton, Will Switzer, of Chapin, Earl Switzer, of McIntire, Iowa, Wayne Switzer, of Moberly, Missouri, John Switzer, of Princeton, Illinois, and Mrs. Gayle LeFevre, of Mason City, who survive, and Mrs. Hazel Green and Walter Switzer, who preceded them in death.
"Also surviving are twenty-five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Pheba Ann Harris, of Flint, Michigan, and Mrs. Jenny Burwell, of Mason City."
