Franklin County
It’s Past & Present

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP

Oakland Township was organized in 1868, by detaching Township 90, range 22, from Morgan Township, and the west half of Township 90, range 21, from Reeve Township, and organizing a new township.

The first settlers of this township, so far as known, were on “Dr.” Crawford, F. Mitchell, and H. C. Holmes. Holmes made a claim in 1854, where John I. Popejoy now resides, and sold out to Mr. P. the same year. The present whereabouts of any of the three first mentioned individuals is unknown. Some of the principal farmers of Oakland Township are J. M. Baker, J. R. Dodd, E. A. Smith, J. D. Brand, G. A. Polhemus, Daniel Cass, and Wm. Thorp.
