Charles City rites set for ex-teacher

CHARLES CITY, IOWA- Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Melcher, 76, former Charles City High School principal and teacher, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church here.
Mrs Melcher died Saturday at Azusa, Calif., where she had been a patient in a nursing home several months.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Melcher was born Jan. 15, 1888, at LeMars to Frank and Mary Klaus. She married Clarence Melcher, who died Feb. 21, 1927.

She was graduated from Garner High School in 1907 and Morningside College in 1911. She attended three summer sessions at the University of Chicago.

She served as principal and English instructor at Postville High School in 1911. She came to Charles City as an English teacher in 1912. She served as principal from 1914 to 1917. She then left teaching until 1925, when her husband became ill. She stayed with the high school as a full time English teacher until 1954. In 1955, she taught two periods of English.

Mrs Melcher was a member of the Iowa State Education Association and the First Methodist Church. She directed the church choir for many years.

Survivors include two children, Mrs. Marilyn Folck of Santa Monica, Calif., and Edward of Newton, Kan.; four grandchildren and one brother,
J. E. Welemeyer of Kansas City.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
