Robert Earl Schmidt was born on March 5, 1922 at the home of his parents, Edward “Ed” and Leona (Phundheller) Schmidt, in Rockford, Iowa. Bob was the eldest of five siblings (Bob, Marion, Helen, Herb and Alta) and they grew up on the family farm outside of Rockford.

Bob entered service with the United States Army on December 10, 1942 and spent time in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. He went to England in April of 1944, landing in France in June of 1944 following D-Day. Bob was a member of the 908 Field Artillery Unit and served our country in France and Germany. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945.

Bob met Gwen following his service in World War II at the introduction of his friend Robert Gauger and his sister Helen. The couple was married on November 13, 1948 in Cedar Rapids and moved to Charles City where Bob started working at the Oliver Plant. Later, they moved to a farm near Rockford where he farmed on his own and continued helping on the family farm. He and Gwen moved into Charles City in December of 1976 and Bob retired from farming in 1979. Bob continued working for Becker Home Improvement doing carpentry work and later in his retirement worked part time (mostly to keep busy) doing janitorial work at the Charles City YMCA.

Robert and Gwen had two children, Jeanne and Mark. He served in the church for many years as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Bob loved the Lord deeply. He enjoyed gardening, reading and sports. Bob was a Hawkeye at heart and loved seeing the Chicago Cubs win the World Series in 2016! He and Gwen took many trips to Texas to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandkids. They also took many bus trips across the United States. Bob enjoyed time spent on the farm with Mark and Jane to garden, build and take care of other farming needs through the years.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Leona Schmidt; his wife, Gwen; brother, Herb; and three sisters: Marion, Helen and Alta.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Jeanne (Steve) Regier; son, Mark (Jane) Schmidt; seven grandchildren: Scott (Lisa) Regier, Heather (Shawn) Carusella, Brian (Dotti) Regier, Shannan (Rod) Potts, Stacey (Austin) Martin, Sonni (Brad) Martzahn and Sydney (Ryan) Franzen; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Hauser Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of local arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hauserfh.com
