BRITT, IOWA -- Hazel E. (Runge) Wirtjes, 98, of Britt, and formerly of Nora Springs, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services for Hazel Wirtjes will be held on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Ewing Funeral Chapel 178 Center Street West in Britt. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at Ewing Funeral Chapel. www.ewingfh.com

Hazel (Runge) Wirtjes

Hazel E. (Runge) Wirtjes, 98, of Britt, Iowa, and formerly of Nora Springs, Iowa, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Westview Care Center in Britt, with her loving family by her side.

Funeral services for Hazel Wirtjes will be held on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Ewing Funeral Chapel 178 Center Street West in Britt. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at Ewing Funeral Chapel.

Hazel Emma Runge was born on December 20, 1919 to Max and Emma (Kirchgatter) Runge in Grafton, Iowa. She went to school until the 8th grade. Hazel married Henry Wirtjes, Jr. on December 11, 1938 and gave birth to a daughter, Janice Marie Wirtjes on August 11, 1944. They lived on a farm near Plymouth, Iowa until 1954, when Hazel and Janice moved to Nora Springs, Iowa. Hazel worked at Neil’s Café, Bellows Bakery, and Bascom Nursing Home in Nora Springs for several years before working at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mason City, Iowa for a few years. Then back to the Nora Springs Care Center until she retired.

She loved gardening, especially flowers and berries. Hazel also enjoyed boutiquing Christmas balls, embroidering, and making greeting cards.

Hazel is survived by her daughter Janice “Jan” (Dwight) Leerar; grandchildren Brian (Diana) Moore, Jefry Moore, Karin (Damon) Baker, Alison “Ali” Leerar, Anthony “Andy” (Misty) Leerar; great-grandchildren Nicholas “Nic” (Holly) Moore, Jesse Moore, Christopher Moore, Nathaniel Moore, Olivia Moore, Jamey Moore, Joshua Baker, Travis Wester, Heather Bergman, Bailee Leerar, Spencer Leerar, Natily Leerar; great great-grandchildren Deegan Moore, Easton Moore, and Emerson Bellman; sister-in-law Phylis Runge; and her nephews.

Hazel is preceded in death by her parents Max and Emma; brother Virgel Runge; sisters Evelyn Klinetop, Vivian Boyer, and Arlene Klinetop; great-grandson David Roy Wester.
