Aloysius John Naumann

Al was born the fifth of nine children to Ester (Lawless) and George Naumann in Charles City, Iowa. He grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Charles City High School where he lettered in track. Al moved to Dillon, Iowa where he was married and raised his two children, Theo and Jacob.

In 1986 Al moved to Johns Island, SC, where he became a Master Plumber. For 31 years he owned Al Naumann Plumbing, Inc. with his wife Cindy. Often he could be found in his shop where he enjoyed engineering, making or repairing parts for anything and everything.

Al had a great love of the outdoors that included a thermos of coffee, his dog, trapping, hunting, boating, fishing, camping. While metal detecting and privy digging in Charleston, SC he recovered many Civil War treasures like bullets, buttons, tokens and slave tags as well as pre-1900 bottles and porcelain artifacts. He loved tractor pulling with the Charleston Antique and Tractor Society; John Deere being his favorite make. Most recently he enjoyed racing remote control boats with The Charleston Model Boaters Assoc.

Al was passionate about gold prospecting with the GPAA in California, Oregon, and Alaska. He relished an occasional trip to a casino and shooting friendly games of pool. His greatest joys in life were spoiling his grandchildren and hanging out in “brother” Joe’s garage.

In 2016 Al and Cindy moved to Des Moines, spending precious time with grown “kids,” grandchildren, family and friends.

Al died peacefully at the Taylor House in Des Moines. He spent his last weeks surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, friends, family and yes, his dog Shiloh.

Al is survived by his loving family: wife, Cindy; daughter, Theo (Dave) Filanowicz; son, Jacob (Carrie) Naumann; grandchildren: Emma, Ellie, Audrey and Carter Naumann, Margaret and John Filanowicz: Christopher and Jacob Sweat: stepson; Jeremy (Dreama) Sweat, siblings: Mary Jane Akin, Veronica Lack, George Naumann, Rita Bozwell, Patricia Davis, Angela Ethington, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
