MRS. EMELIE BIRKHOLZ DIES AT ORCHARD

Mrs. Emelie Birkholz, 80, passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Pauline Sims, at Orchard, Iowa yesterday afternoon at 1:45 o’clock. She had been staying the past four months at Orchard but retained her residence in this city at 510 South Main Street in Charles City, Iowa.

She came to the United States from Germany at the age of 16 and has since resided in and around Charles City. Her husband, William Birkholz died June 20, 1935.

Note: William was her second husband in a marriage that occurred on November 11, 1925 in Charles City, Iowa. Her first marriage to Julius Ernest Marquardt probably occurred about 1875 in Charles City, Iowa and lasted about 47 years until Julius’s death in 1922. Their union produced 7 children.

Surviving Mrs. Birkholz are the following sons and daughters: Otto Marquardt, Junction City, Ore.; Walter Marquardt, Devils Lake, N.D.; Mrs. Sims, Orchard; Mrs. G. E. Rinehart, Charles City; Mrs. Nettie Lang, Berkley, California. Also surviving are two brothers, William and Henry Mathews, Charles City. There are 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran church, preceded by a prayer service at 2:00 at the Grossmann Funeral Home. The Rev. C.G. Prottengeier will officiate and interment will be in the Riverside cemetery.

Note: Emilie is buried with her first husband Julius Marquardt. They have a shared headstone.

Source: A newspaper clipping among the Birkholz family papers. A copy of the clipping was included in a family scrapbook compiled by Carol Spicer, of Thompson, North Dakota in 2008. Handwritten on the clipping is the date Sept 23, 1937. The notice was likely published in a local newspaper in Charles City, Iowa.
