MRS. E. H. SWANT DIES SUDDENLY
Passed Away in Hospital at Waterloo Monday MorningThis community was shocked beyond words of expression last Monday morning, when the news was flashed over the wires that Mrs. E. H. Swant, had that morning passed away at the Presbyterian hospital at Waterloo. The passing was so sudden that it was hard to realize it, and has cast a gloom over the entire community.
Mrs. Swant was only sick about a week, being taken very suddenly with appendicitis and was at once taken to the hospital, where an operation was performed immediately after arriving there Monday evening, March 29. She recovered from the operation and it was thought she was getting along nicely until last Sunday when she became worse and passed away Monday morning, Apr 5th.
Bertha May Ackley, was born in Marble Rock Iowa, January 22nd, 1875 and passed away April 5th, 1920 at the age of forty-five years, two months and twenty-six days.
She united with M. E. church at an early age and has ever been one of the most faithful and true members.
She was united in marriage to Edward H. Swant June the 20th, 1906. The fourteen years of their married life have been unusually happy. Having no children of her own, she devoted her time and thought to the interests and pleasures of other children of the family, by whom she will be greatly missed. But her usefulness and helpfulness did not end there, being highly educated and accomplished, she was a great success in our schools, in society and especially in all branches of her church work, where she labored unceasingly in the Master’s vineyard. Mrs. Swant filled many offices of trust and honor in the church and was at the time of her death President of the Ladies Aid society.
It does not seem possible that this life of useful activity has ended and that she had heard the Master’s “well-done”, but the all-wise Father doeth all things well.
Mrs. Swant was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Ackley. Her mother preceded her to her eternal home, June 5th, 1912. She leaves to mourn her untimely death, her devoted husband, E. H. Swant an aged father, R. J. Ackley, four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Merrick Ward and Mrs. Albert Gates, of Marble Rock; Mrs. Lew Brunner of Clear Lake and Mrs. Irene Neiman of Ava Mo.; Harry and Ashberry Ackley of Marble Rock besides many other relatives and friends. She was the first of seven children to be called home.
The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon, the sermon being preached by Rev. T. H. Sheckler, her former pastor, who took for his text, “There is but a step between me and death”. Beautiful selections were sung by Chas Moore, George Barber, Mayme Spaulding and Ralph Walster, accompanied by Mrs. S. E. Tennant.
Beautiful flowers were there offering their silent sympathy and hope of the resurrection. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
During the hours of the funeral all business houses were closed, as a mark of respect to one who had led an exemplary and beautiful life among us for forty-five years.
Burial took place at Hillside cemetery in Marble Rock.
