RUDD, IOWA — Richard “Dick” Dight, 71, of Rudd, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Dick’s life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, with a time of sharing beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City.

Richard Donald Dight was born on Nov. 6, 1945, in Charles City, IA. He was the son of Howard and Edith (Bethell) Dight of Charles City. He started school attending Ulster #8 country school and then went to Charles City schools, graduating in 1963. After graduating Dick started his farming career and purchasing his first farm in 1964.

Dick always had a love for the land/farming and raising pigs and his cow/calf herd. He was proud of the prize-winning show cattle that he raised for his children to show and to sell for other youth to show at local and state fairs. He served on the Farmers Coop/Rockford board of directors for many years, sold Agri Pro seed and served on the Floyd County Fair board for many years where he also served as president. Dick also worked at A&B Elevator in Charles City, delivered Sar seed corn and had his own trucking business.

In his younger years he loved tractor pulling with “Little Puff” his Allis tractor and pulling the micro mini tractor which he made himself. He enjoyed snowmobiling and hanging out with Russ Sido, Bill Koehler and Mike Trettin (the four amigos).

Dick was active in 4-H as a youth and was a 4-H leader and was very active in the Charles City FFA and won state and national meat judging contests through FFA. Dick suffered a stroke in 2006 which ended his farming and cattle career, and diagnosed with lung cancer July 2015.

He was united in marriage to Brenda Kock on May 18, 1974, in Charles City. They enjoyed farm life for 41 years before moving to Rudd in October 2015 due to his poor health. They loved the farm and raised three children on that farm, Kyle, Trent and Kate, and taught them the values of farming and farm life. He was very proud of his kids, Kyle, Trent and Kate for their cattle and other livestock showing abilities. He was proud of Trent for stepping up to take over the love of the farming after his stroke and Kate for following her dream and love of teaching of pre-school and Pre-K students.

Dick is survived by his wife, Brenda of Rudd; children: Trent (Jerri) Dight of rural Rockford and Kate (Steve) Porter of Eagle Grove; four grandchildren: Dillan, Tyson and Braxton Dight of Rockford and Kenley Porter of Eagle Grove; mother and father-in-law Sylvan and Thelma Kock of Greene; brother, Robert (Marian) Dight of Charles City; sister-in-law, Pam Dight of Osage; in-laws: Rob Younie of Jefferson, Carma Hillman of Marble Rock and Sherrine Bundt of Menomonee, WI; and many friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews.
