George Tumilson, 81, of Rockford, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December 9, 2016.

A funeral service for George Tumilson will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford with Judy Wooton officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2016 and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Saturday.

George Tumilson, the son of Thomas and Nellie (Fowler) Tumilson, was born August 2, 1935 in Rockford, Iowa. He attended school in Rockford, graduating from Rockford High School in 1955.

George began working at the Rockford Brick & Tile before enlisting in the Army. He proudly served his country from June 11, 1958 until his honorable discharge on June 2, 1960. Upon returning home, George continued his work at the Rockford Brick and Tile before beginning his lifetime career in construction.

On September 3, 1966, George was united in marriage to Kathleen "Kathy" Jacobs at First United Methodist Church in Rudd. The couple made their home in Rockford and they were blessed with three children. George worked construction with his two brothers, Don and Bob with Tumilson Brothers Construction.

He was also owner of GTS Construction with Tom Squire, Royal Structures with Chuck Greenman and finally George Tumilson Construction until his retirement in the late 90's. George also helped out local farmers during harvest time by combining for them; the girls have fond memories of riding with dad in the combine and bringing him meals.

George was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockford where he served as Trustee. He was also active on the Board for 3 Minutes Out. He was part of a card club for many years, playing 500. George enjoyed woodworking, watching Westerns, and reading.

He loved his country and was a true patriot. Those who knew him would say he was a quiet presence and a "gentle giant". George loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren whom he supported in their activities.

Living family members include his two daughters: Kristie (Gregg) Vieira of Cedar Rapids and Joy McMeekan of Taylor Ridge, Illinois; adopted daughter, Torrie (Jeff) Ulfig of Virginia Beach, Virginia; six grandchildren: Kobey, Kamryn and Kaitlyn Pohlman and Kelsi, Sydney and Isabella McMeekan; brother, Don (Mary) Tumilson; six sisters: Laura (Dick) Paul, Cora (Jim) Schroeder, Ann (Melvin) Reiter, Nell Tumilson, Lucky Kauffman and Mary Tumilson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathy on February 9, 2015; son, SOC (SEAL) Jon Thomas Tumilson; son-in-law, Scott McMeekan; four brothers: Richard "Sam", Thomas, David and Robert; and two sisters: Betty Schindele and Thomasena Gruver.
