A memorial service for Charline Johnson will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd with Pastor Wendy Johannesen officiating. Inurnment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

A gathering of family and friends will be at Hauser Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2016 and will continue one hour prior to the memorial service at the church on Thursday.

Charline Johnson, the daughter of John and Carrie (Booher) Rucker, was born October 13, 1922 in Eagleville, Missouri. She attended rural school and Eagleville High School before moving to Iowa in 1941. Charline worked at Kakac Store in Saratoga and was a licensed Radio Technician from the Sprayberry Academy. She repaired radios in her shop at the Kakac Store and in its general vicinity. Charline always preferred to do something interesting and looked for a higher ladder to climb. She decided to take flying lessons and become an airplane pilot, feeling very air-minded.

Charline wanted to look at life and the beautiful land from many angles (yes, height was the answer). She was the first woman aviator in Mitchell, Howard and Floyd counties and a feminine dare devil who performed acrobatics in air shows. Charline also became a commercial pilot which helped her enjoy more open spaces and the outdoor life.

On December 28, 1948, Charline married Merrill Johnson of Floyd and became a farmer's wife. They worked together in the fields, raised turkeys for 18 years, milk cows, pigs and just enjoyed farm life in general. She was always very giving of her time for her church work of cooking meals or whatever else was needed. For several years, during the winter months they spent winters in Texas and Arizona. Charline lived in the Grafton Territory for three years otherwise she resided in the Floyd area.

Charline was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd where she served on the Church Board for many years. She also served on the Cemetery Board for several years.

Charline's lawn, flowers and gardening were a real beauty to her life in her later years. Sewing and craft work also kept her very busy. In fact, there was not much spare time. She was very active at harvest time which was a true pleasure to her, looking forward to hauling in grain and preparing meals for her family wherever she was needed. She always found time to just try easing pressure and helping the other workers. It was a great feeling of communication for her. The family was close knitted and always worked together; a family she just worshipped. Her son Maurice and his wife Pam along with their boys, Ben and Andy, were the apple of her eye.

Living family members include her son, Maurice (Pam) Johnson of Floyd; two grandsons: Ben (Amy) Johnson of Floyd along with their sons, Jackson and Riley and Andy (Abbie) Johnson of Charles City along with their son, Kyle; brother, Edwin (Crystal) Rucker of Missouri; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merrill on June 17, 2001; six sisters; and five brothers.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Grace United Methodist Church Repair Fund.
