Donald ‘Don’ Casler

ROCKFORD — Donald “Don” Casler, 79, of Rockford, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at his home.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at The Bridge Church (First Wesleyan Church), Charles City, with Pastor Robert Williams and Pastor Gordon Berryman officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday at the church.

Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald "Don" Casler, 79, of Rockford, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at his home with his loving family by his side.

A funeral service for Don Casler will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2016 at The Bridge Church (First Wesleyan Church), 913 South Main Street, in Charles City with Pastor Robert Williams and Pastor Gordon Berryman officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home Sunday, June 26, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday at the church.

Donald David Casler, the son of Vernon and Emma (Scheuler) Casler, was born October 19, 1936 in Algona, Iowa. He grew up in the Algona area, moving to Thompson, Iowa where he graduated from Thompson High School in 1954. After graduation, Don worked various jobs and was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia where he trained foreign recruits for active duty in the Vietnam War. Don was honorably discharged from the Army and continued to work various jobs.

He was married and this union was blessed with two sons, Monte and Verlynn. Don worked in the Lake Mills and Forest City areas before moving to Rockford.

In 1968, Don moved to Rockford as an employee of People's Natural Gas. The company changed names throughout his career, but Don worked for the same company until his retirement in 1999. On June 30, 1975, Don married Edwina (Trettin) Johnson in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Rockford along with Don's two children (Monte and Verlynn) and Edwina's two children (Cynthia and Cory).

Don was a member of First Wesleyan Church (The Bridge Church) in Charles City since 1981 where he was very active in teaching Sunday school, leading children's church and serving on the board for many years.

He was a volunteer fireman, Boy Scout leader, active in the Jaycees, first aid instructor, member of the Rockford City Council for many terms, was a reserve police officer for the city of Rockford, active at the Life Counseling Center in Clear Lake, a member of the Floyd County Memorial Committee for the Veteran's Memorial at the courthouse in Charles City and enjoyed rock hounding.

Don was a lay pastor trained through the Methodist Church, a local pastor, ministering through area Wesleyan churches and served on the board of the Hanford Community Church in rural Mason City for a number of years. He was involved with the Cedar Springs Wesleyan Camp as a board member and worked maintenance throughout the camp.

Living family members include his wife of 41 years, Edwina of Rockford; four children: Monte (Laura) Casler of Charles City, Verlynn Casler (Kim Burris) of Charles City, Cindy Trettin (Pat Merfeld) of Rockford and Cory Casler of Indianapolis, Indiana; ten grandchildren: Andrew (Taylor) Kaspar, Matthew (Molly) Kaspar, Angela Kaspar (Jim Clemons), John Kaspar (Kelsey Peters), Matthew Casler, Andrew Casler, Nicole Casler, Nathan Casler, Luke Casler and Jacob Casler; four great-grandchildren: Adrianne, Alexis, Ava, Christian and Madeline on the way; sister, Elaine Batton-Boll of Lakefield, Minnesota; brother, Richard (Marsha) Casler of Leland; mother-in-law, Margaret Trettin of Rockford; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Byron Behrends; and father-in-law, Edwin Trettin.
