CHARLES CITY, IOWA — DeVon Charles Thorsen, 92, of Charles City, died Sunday, April 17, 2016, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Homes.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, with the Rev. Ruth Yeaton officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with military honors by the Charles City VFW.

Fullerton Hage Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary for DeVon Charles Thorsen
DeVon Charles Thorsen, 92, of Charles City, Iowa, died Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Homes.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am with a one hour prior visitation on Friday, April 22, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane. Reverend Ruth Yeaton will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with Military Honors by the Veterans Flag Ceremonial Unit.

DeVon was born on April 3, 1924 in Charles City to William and Dorothy (Stocks) Thorsen. He attended rural schools in Floyd County and graduated from Charles City High School in 1942.

After graduation he served in the United States Army 106th Infantry Division during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. DeVon was inducted on April 11, 1944 and honorably discharged on April 23, 1946. He was a Charles City resident his whole life, other than the time he spent in the Army.

On September 6, 1944 he was united in marriage to Lois Lacour outdoors at her parent’s home. To their union one son Dennis was born. DeVon farmed for two years then began working for the City of Charles City on the street department. In November of 1951 DeVon began working for Salsbury Laboratory as a Department Manager. He continued working there for 36 years until retirement in 1988.

DeVon was a member of the First Baptist Church. He served on the church board of trustees. He was also a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Charles City VFW.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Dennis Thorsen of St. Peter, MN; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Amy (Jay) Voorhees of Rosemount, MN and their children: Justin, Grace and Matthew, Bobbi Jo (Chris Kubiaczyk) Drum of Portland, OR and their children: Ava, Elle and Ana, Kari (Greg Patenaude) Thorsen of Seattle, WA and their daughter: Eleanor and Kate (Ben) Sandvik of St. Paul, MN and their children: Charlie and Gavin; three nieces and one nephew.

DeVon was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Thorsen; parents, William and Dorothy Thorsen and brother, Clarence Thorsen.
