Obituary for Duane S. Holmes

Duane Spilman Holmes, age 87, passed away Friday, March 18, 2016, at the Nora Springs Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, with Pastor David Werges officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Friday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs.

Duane S. Holmes was born on August 13, 1928, in Denver, Colorado, to Clare J. and Lillie T. (Spilman) Holmes. At one year of age, he moved with his parents to rural North Iowa where he continued to reside until his death.

Upon graduating from Nora Springs High School in 1946, he served with the U.S. Army and served for 18 months between World War II and the Korean War.
Duane farmed with his dad until 1956 at which time he changed his career path and accepted employment as a truck driver with Kelley Truck Line of Nora Springs.

Five years later he began a new job with Mitchell Transport of Mason City. He worked for them until they terminated their business in November of 1982. Shortly thereafter he was offered a position with Stockberger Transfer & Storage of Mason City. He retired in October of 1989 when Stockberger went out of business. He was a member of Teamster Local 828, Mason City, Iowa.

Fishing, gardening and traveling kept him busy after his retirement. Most of his travels were in the United States; however, he did take several trips to Europe. After 33 years of truck driving, traveling now became his hobby. The call of the open road stayed with him all of his life. He was always ready for a ride!

On December 20, 1968, Duane was united in marriage with Shirley (Steinlicht) Paine. They made their home in Nora Springs where they lived for 21 years. After a short illness, Shirley passed away in 1989.

Duane is survived by three daughters: Cindy (Jerry) Rasmus, of Destrehan, LA; Julie (Dave) Underriner, of Grafton, Iowa; and Susan (Scott) Wilde of Grafton, Iowa; and son-in-law, Loren Mahnesmith, of Nora Springs, Iowa. He had 12 grandchildren: Raymond Nehls; Angela (John) Hamilton; Troy (Kelly) Brierly; Amy Rasmus; Michele (Kelly) Hert; Mitchell Mahnesmith (Amber Allison); Mindy Mahnesmith (Shelby Stansell); Deneen (Lucas) Nelson; Jared Underriner; Celeste Underriner; Morgan (Ethan) Dykstra and Lauren Wilde. He had 12 great-grandchildren: Kaitlynn, Levi, Cassidy, Dallas, Lucas, Claire, Terence, MegAnn, Uriah, Ian, Gram and Genevieve. Duane is also survived by his sister, Bonnie Kartel, of Boise, Idaho, and many nieces and nephews.
