Careldena "Toddy" (Greenfield) Shanks was born on January 25, 1916, in Alexander, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Vassal Lena (Edens) Greenfield.

Careldena moved with her family as a teenager to a farm NW of Rudd in 1929. She graduated from the Rudd High School in 1932, and was united in marriage to Roger Shanks in August of 1934, and to this marriage two children were born, Virginia and Larry. Roger and Careldena moved onto the Shanks farm north of Rudd in 1937 where Careldena lived for 76 years until, in her words, her driver's license was stolen from her. Careldena resided at the Nora Springs Care Center from 2013 until her death.

Careldena will be best remembered for her hard work and devotion in support of Roger on the family farm and tireless dedication to the education for her children. Careldena was active in the Rudd Methodist Church and was the chairwoman in charge of the original Buffalo Dinners in the 1950's.

Careldena went back to school and obtained certifications for farm income taxes after her children had graduated from college. She worked for H&R Block for 33 years retiring in 2000 after both her children had retired from their respective jobs with a comment, "What's wrong with this picture?"

Those left to cherish her memory are her two children, Virginia "Ginger" Holmes of Clear Lake and Larry (Conni) Shanks of Spring Branch, Texas; four grandchildren, Linda (Reed) Braden of Hudson, Iowa, Michael "Mike" (Janine) Holmes of Shakopee, Minnesota, Brad Shanks of Thomasville, Al, and Christen Shanks of San Antonio, Tx; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Careldena was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Shanks; her parents, Henry and Vassal Lena Greenfield; her younger sister, Ruberta Quarn, and her younger brother, Duaine Greenfield; her sisters-in-law, Jean Moeller, Nelva Aubuchon, and Ruth Dorsey; and a son-in-law, John A. Holmes.
