Ervin Solberg was born on August 12, 1925, on a farm west of Osage to Christian and Betsy (Olsen) Solberg. He was baptized in the Rock Creek Lutheran Church southwest of Osage. Ervin's father died in 1927, his mother married his uncle, Martin Solberg in 1929. They moved to a farm southeast of Rock Falls. He received his education at Rock Falls School until his senior year. The family moved back to the Osage area.

Ervin graduated from Mitchell High School in 1942. After working the summer of 1942 for the Rock Island Railroad as a gandy dancer for a few months, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he worked for shipyards until June of 1943. He then joined the Navy and served for 32 months; two years aboard the USS Regulus. He went to work for the Oliver Corporation in March of 1946. In 1953 Ervin married Dorothy King. To this union six children were born.

Ervin was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a man of many talents, he could do anything he put his mind to; ("jack of trades and master of none", he would often say!) He loved carpentry as a hobby and would build grandfather clocks, for all of his six children along with shelves, horses, and bookcases. Ervin enjoyed playing 500, bowling, pool, softball, canoeing at the Rock Falls River, croquet, hobby farming, cookouts, camping with his family in Rock Falls, and anytime family would come to the farm and visit.

He would go visit his brother in Wisconsin, took a trip to Canada with Tom Houdek and relatives, saw the Cardinal game in Missouri, many Twins games with his family and enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings with his wife. Above all he loved spending time with his family. His wife, Dorothy was his best friend. Ervin was a loving, husband, father, brother, and friend.

Living family members include his wife, Dorothy of 62 years; six children: Michael (Mary) Solberg of Nora Springs, Susan Helmer of Saint Peters, Missouri, Thomas (Pam) Solberg of Clear Lake, Linda Couillard of Floyd, Janet Solberg of Knoxville, and Diane (Tom) Houdek of Charles City; eight grandchildren: Jessica (Gautham) Meka, Brittine (Josh) Summers, Cody Helmer, Jacie Solberg (special friend, Tristyn), TJ Houdek, Chris (Kelly) Upenieks, and Larissa (fiancé, Daniel) Perverill; six great grandchildren: Blaze and Ava Upenieks, Ellianah and Leeland Summers, Amarah Peverill, and Dhilan Ervin Meka; one brother, Marvin (Lucille) Solberg of Floyd.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Betsy Solberg; step-father, Martin Solberg; two brothers, Alf and Ralph Solberg; son-in-law, Jack Couillard; and a beloved dog, Jake.
