Duane Fredrick Knapp – January 25, 1924 – March 9, 1946

ASSAILANT OF MARBLE ROCK MAN STILL NOT KNOWN, SHERIFF SAID

DEATH OF DUANE KNAPP, 22, POSSIBLY AT HANDS OF UNKNOWN PERSON STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION BY MASON CITY OFFICIALS.

Although his office has two special investigators studying the case, Sheriff Tim Phalen of Mason City, said Tuesday that no definite clues nor suspects had been found as to the identity of the unknown person whose attack may have been responsible for the death of Deane Knapp, age 22, of Marble Rock. Persons have been interviewed in Britt, Marble Rock and Clear Lake, but no witnesses have yet been located.

Duane was injured when, it is understood, he was struck on the head by the unknown assailant as he left the Surf ballroom at Clear Lake early Thursday morning, March 7th. His brother and others of his party had preceded him and did not see his attacker or know he had been struck until, on hearing sounds behind them, they turned to find Duane unconscious on the sidewalk.

The young man regained consciousness shortly afterward and was taken home in the car with the rest of the party, seemingly recovered.

About 11:00 o’clock on Thursday morning, however, he became ill again and was removed to a Charles City hospital, where he died Saturday, march 9th, of a cerebral hemorrhage, believed to have resulted from the blow on his head.

It is possible that his attacker mistook him for someone else and fled after hitting him. As far as is known, neither Duane nor any of his party had been in any trouble at the ballroom.

Funeral services were held in Greene at the Catholic Church last Tuesday.
