#2:

RUDD, IOWA - Leland Harry Moore, 78, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

He was born April 9, 1937, in Rudd, the son of Homer and Irene (Rolfes) Moore. Leland graduated from Rudd High School, where he was active in many sports as a Rudd Ranger. He worked as a traveling salesman and farmed with his father and brother Larry in his early career.

Leland married Sandy Johnson on November 2, 1957, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City. In 1967, Leland and Sandy took over his father’s Moore L.P. Gas business and operated it with their daughter Kim until their retirement in 1996. Leland supported numerous other business ventures in the North Iowa area during his lifetime, managing three Moore’s Car Wash locations in Rudd, Nora Springs, and Osage, as well as Moore’s Car Care Center and Timm’s Tint, which were operated by his daughter Tammy and son Timm.

Leland was an avid fisherman and went on many fishing trips to Canada and northern Minnesota, but most of his free time was spent in Bay City, Wisconsin, where he kept his camping trailer and boat, which were enjoyed by himself, his children and grandchildren.

He was known for making to-do lists for himself and others —- whether they wanted them or not — and always had a project in the works out in his office. Leland was a recovering alcoholic who was sober for 35 years, and he counseled many friends and family members over the decades, always offering wise advice and a familiar phrase or two: “It’s a short period of time out of your life,” and “If it’s perfect, then it’s close enough.”

His fondness for animals gave many strays a home over the years, and an afternoon spent with Lee and Sandy would often include an education on the different species of birds that called their backyard bird sanctuary home. Leland was known as “Papa” by his grandchildren, always making time to ask about their lives and interests— at the price of a kiss and a hug — and would always send a bag of fresh-baked cookies home with anyone who stopped by for a visit.

Leland is survived by his children Tammy Wood of Rudd, Kim (Dennis) Popp of Osage, and Timm (Robin) Moore of Rudd; ten grandchildren, Nikki (Ben) Nagel, Brittnee (Blaine) Crawford, Adam Popp, Steven (Cassandra) Moore, Kelli Wood, Cody Wood, Savannah Moore, Sabrina Moore, Joe Popp, and Ben Popp; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Larry Moore of Rudd.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sandy, his parents, one sister, and three brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 11, at 3 p.m., and the funeral service will follow at 5:30 p.m. Both will be held at Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 Sixth St. in Rudd.

Funeral service preparations were made through Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services in Cedar Rapids.
