Rachel Helen (Shafer) Sheets – April 20, 1880 – April 24, 1917

Obituary

Rachel Helen Sheets was born in Union Township, Floyd County, Iowa on April 20, 1880 and departed this life at Independence, Iowa, April 24, 1917, making her age 37 years and 4 days.

She received the most of her education in the rural schools at this township and in the Marble Rock High School, from which she graduated as valedictorian of her class.
After spending about three months in the Iowa State Normal School she very successfully taught for several years in the public schools.

On March 8, 1903, she was united in marriage to Arthur f. Sheets and to this union were born four children, three daughters; Stella May, Dorthy Helen, and Eleanor, the latter dying in infancy; and one son, Raymond Lewis.

In early childhood, Rachel gave her life unto the keeping of the Crist, who she ever loved and served actively and faithfully. She will be greatly missed by the Bethel Baptist church of this place.

Besides leaving a husband and three children to mourn the loss of a faithful and loving wife and mother, she leaves three brothers; John of Ottumwa, Alvin of Powersville, and George of Marble Rock, and four sisters; Mrs. Mary Hidore of Packard, Mrs. Bertha Hutchinson of Kansas City, Missouri, Mable Shafer of Glenwood, Iowa, Maude A. Shafer of Kansas City, Missouri and a score of relatives and friends who have lost a constant and kind sister and friend.

Funeral services were held Thursday April 20, at two o’clock from the Baptist church, Rev. Kelford officiating and interment made in the East Side Cemetery.

Rachel Helen Shafer was born in Union Township, Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel Kearney Shafer and Martha (Maxon) Shafer.
She married Arthur Frank Sheets.
