TWO GIRLS KILLED IN AUTO-TRAIN ACCIDENT
TRAPPED IN CAR APPARENTLY AS IT CATCHES FIRE
VICTIMS ARE GLADYS GRACE, MARBLE ROCK AND MARJORIE KRULL, GREENE
Marble Rock, Ia – Two 17 year old girls were killed early Thursday morning when the automobile in which they were riding crashed into a northbound Rock Island freight train at a crossing near ice depot here.

The dead were Marjorie Krull, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krull, living near Greene, and Gladys Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Grace, near Marble Rock.

Carl Hauser, coroner of Floyd County, said that the two girls were riding with Harry and Lyle Krull, brothers of Marjorie, and Kenneth Ritter. Harry Krull was driving.

Coroner Hauser said the car became entangled between box cars and was dragged nearly 600 feet, where it caught fire. Both girls were burned beyond recognition, and one of the youths made identification.
ACCIDENT UNEXPLAINED
According to coroner Hauser the young people were returning home when their car struck the freight and he can give no reason for the accident as it was a moonlight night, unless frost covered the inside of the windshield and obscured their vision.

Coroner Hauser is of the opinion that the girls were burned alive as indications were they both attempted to escape from the automobile. Miss Krull, according to the coroner, was probably riding in the front seat and Miss Grace in the rear.

BOYS IN HOSPITAL

It was believed the boys were thrown from the car. All were taken to Cedar Valley hospital at Charles City.

Harry Krull received compound fracture of lower jaw, first, second, third degree burns, multiple lacerations about face and probable basal skull fracture.

Ritter received first, second, third degree burns, compound fracture of the nose, multiple lacerations about the face and severed tendons in left hand.

Lyle Krull received severs burns and lacerations about the face.

Traffic was tied up for more than three hours before the northbound freight was able to resume its journey, together with a southbound freight and a troop train on a side track.

Bodies of the girls were taken to the Hann Funeral home at Greene.
