Robert "Bob" Andrew Carney was born September 23, 1921, to Andrew and Pearl (Brown) Carney in Compton, CA. When he was five years old, the family moved from California to Iowa, settling near Marble Rock in the farm home built by Bob's grandfather in 1894. Bob attended country school, Marble Rock Elementary School, and graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1940. He enjoyed participating in band under the direction of O.K. Conklin and maintained a friendship with him long past his school years. He was very active in the local Boy Scout troop, participating in many activities and trips.

After graduation, Bob farmed with his father until 1942 when he was inducted into the Army, serving with the 14th Armored Division - 94th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized for two years and ten months, including time in Europe. Upon discharge from the Army, Bob re-joined his father in raising crops and livestock on the family farm southeast of Marble Rock.

On January 28, 1951, Bob married Arlene Kielsmeier at the Flood Creek Methodist Church near Rockford. They are the parents of Dennis, Diane, Donna, and Dawn.

Bob was a faithful member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He worked behind the scenes fixing, painting, and caring for the building and its contents. Bob also shared his talents with the Marble Rock Historical Society where he earned the title of "Mr. Fix-It" as he cleaned and restored many donated items to preserve history for future generations.

For several years, Bob served as President of the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock. In addition, Bob served as President of the Marble Rock Alumni Association and hosted many annual reunion picnics. He was very interested in the work of the Cedar Valley Engine Club, including the annual show where he enjoyed events that preserved memories of farming. For a number of years, Bob participated in the Men's Ecumenical Bible Study Group in Greene, making many friends.

Bob and Arlene enjoyed traveling by car, bus, train, and airplane to see beautiful scenery and visit relatives.

In his quiet way, Bob supported his wife, children, and grandchildren in their various activities. He had a real concern for the whole community and worked hard behind the scenes to improve the area. A note found in his papers after his death stated, "Let it be said, I was there."

Surviving are his wife, Arlene Carney of Charles City; son, Dennis (Diane) Carney of Mason City; daughter, Diane (Clayton) Black of Marble Rock; daughter, Donna Carney of Philadelphia, PA; and daughter, Dawn Hahn of New Glarus, WI. He is also survived by five grandsons: Andrew Carney of Dillon, CO; Stephen Carney of Columbia Falls, MT; Jeremy Hahn of New Glarus, WI; Miles Black (fiancée Trista Behrendsen) of Des Moines; and Alex Hahn of New Glarus, WI. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law and their husbands: Thelma and Sylvan Kock of Greene; Lucille and Eugene Meier of Rockford; and Betty and Max Wedeking of Marble Rock. In addition, he is survived by ten nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Jean Duregger; brother-in-law, Bob Duregger; nephew, Paul Duregger; and niece, Karen Younie.
