Helen Marjorie (Laydon) Staudt

MARBLE ROCK, IOWA - Funeral Mass for Helen M. Staudt, 101, of Marble Rock, will be on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Roseville with the Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Roseville. There will be no wake service.

Helen was born on December 29, 1913, in Republic, the daughter of Cecil Kellar and Ina Belle (Strike) Laydon, and passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs. "Who'd have thought I'd live this long?" She was of Irish and Dutch descent and grew up in rural Republic, outside of Nashua, with her brother, Roger, and the family dog, Bounce. They later moved into Nashua.

Helen earned her teaching certificate from the Teachers College (now UNI), in Cedar Falls. Helen rode her beloved horse, Prince, to teach in a one-room school house in rural Nashua. She later taught in Marble Rock where she met Arnold Staudt.

Helen was united in marriage to Arnold Staudt on November 20, 1945. The couple lived in Marble Rock where Arnold farmed and Helen stayed home to raise Eugene, Jon and Diane. She had a knack for finding humor in unexpected places. In her 90s, she wrote down stories of her life which were then assembled in a self-published book for her family. After the death of Arnold in 2000, Helen moved to Des Moines where she lived in her own home until moving to Nora Springs in 2011.

She kept scrapbooks of obituaries to which she would refer for family histories. The following is provided for those of you who do the same.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Peter (1911-2000); brother, Roger Keith (1916-1977); by her parents, Cecil Kellar Laydon (1891-1963) and Ina Belle (Strike) (1889-1982);
grandparents: Ina Owen Laydon (b.1846) and Anna E. (Pennington) (b.1855); Ceaphas John Strike (b.1862) and Ettie Emily (Goodell) (b. 1864)

Helen is survived by a son, Eugene (a.k.a., Jake) (Robin Smith), Delevan, Wisconsin; granddaughter Elizabeth (Lowell Brower), Cambridge, Mass.; and grandson Quinn, Washington, DC.; son, Jon (Ann Sokolowski), Des Moines; grandson, Andy (Hannah Murphy), London, England; and granddaughter, Dr. Genevieve (Dr. Alex Moore) Boston, Mass.; and a daughter, Diane, Des Moines.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Tosanack Recreation Area in care of Diane Staudt, 721 34th St., Des Moines, IA 50312.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Retz Funeral Home, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock. 641-823-4457, www.retzfh.com .
