Don was born June 26, 1929, the son of Claire and Blanche (Hanchett) Mallery in Floyd County, Iowa. He graduated from Rudd High School. Don met his wife, Alda (Synsby) Mallery, in 1949, at a dance in Rudd. They were married on Sept. 23, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. At that time Don was serving in the U.S. Army as a corporal during the Korean War. After a brief honeymoon, they moved to Kentucky, where he was stationed. After a few months, Don was transferred overseas, and Alda returned home and lived with her parents until his honorable discharge in 1953.

They lived on the family farm just outside of Rudd for the next 50-plus years, where they practiced grain farming and raised livestock. During those years, Don also drove truck for Ernie Wood, worked for Industrial Molasses Corp. and Hoover’s Hatchery. They had four daughters, Jodee, Lynette, Jill, and Dawn, between 1954 and 1962.

He was an active member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, American Legion, and Rudd Lion’s Club. He enjoyed wood working, having coffee with friends, hunting and fishing. He dearly loved his family and spent many vacations playing with grandchildren.

Don is survived by his four daughters, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Jodee Gentile, and her husband, Art, and their children, Ann Gentile and Amy (Aaron) Dobson, of Salida, Colorado; Lynette Harrington, and her husband, Steve, and their children, Ashley and April, of Mason City; Jill Dolphin-Hiebert, and her husband Dr. Jack, of Kansas City, Missouri, and her children, Jeremy of Olathe, Kansas; Jessica (Matt) Pluff of Kansas City, Missouri; and Janessa (Josh) Henges, of Olathe, Kansas; Dawn Lynch, and her husband Stephen, and their daughters, Amber and Megan of New Canaan, Conn.; and four great-grandchildren, Averi Webb; Jacob, Zachary and Halle Dolphin. He is also survived by special friend and companion, Elaine Harman, Mason City, a sister-in-law, Doris Cooley, of Ridgeway, Iowa, an aunt, Beatrice Mallery, Sharon Springs, New York, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alda, in 2005, his parents; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolores and Forrest Muller, Eunice and Les Shelley, Maxine and Dale Vance and Orland "Bud" Cooley; and one son-in-law, George Dolphin.

Don was dearly loved by many, and will be greatly missed.
