ROCKFORD, IOWA - Melvin R. McCauley, 84, of Rockford passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Rockford Riverside Cemetery, presided by Pastor Judy Wooton and members of the American Legion.

A luncheon at Rockford Methodist Church will follow. In case of rain, the service will be at the Rockford Methodist Church.

Melvin Roy McCauley was born on February 28, 1930, to Earl and Lucy Warner McCauley in Marble Rock. Melvin proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 338. He served as post commander in Rockford in 1959 followed by service as Floyd County commander.

He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Clapp on March 27, 1954, in Mason City. To this union four children were born. Melvin was a lifelong farmer. While farming he also worked second jobs over the years: Oliver/White Farm, Rockford Brick & Tile Co., and the Rockford Elevator. After retirement he farmed for Don Buseman Farms. He was a member of the Rockford Methodist Church.

Mel enjoyed family get-togethers and traveling, especially with Glenn and Donna Biggs. He loved going to his grandchildren's activities. He was an avid sports fan, particularly football. In his high school junior/senior years, both teams were undefeated. His senior year he was selected first team all conference.

Mel is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lou; children Michael McCauley of Rockford, David McCauley of Billings, Montana, Cynthia (Danny) Shear of Dumont, and Steven McCauley of Rudd; eight grandchildren: Karen (Thad) Meyer, Shannon (Jeremy) McGough and Ryan McCauley, Cory and Cassandra McCauley, Cody, Kallie, and Kylie Shear; five great-grandchildren: Ella, Spenser, and Lauren Meyer, Lainey and Liam McGough; sisters, Margaret Kleinschmidt and Mary Stange; sister-in-law Jan McCauley; sister-in-law Ardith (Roger) Bradshaw; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Marvin McCauley; and nephew Jon Stange.
