Beverly Ethel (Magilton )Stangeland -- January 1, 1921 - June 28, 2014

Beverly Ethel Betty Stangeland (nee Magilton) Former resident of LeGrand and Grinnell, Iowa, Beverly Stangeland, 93, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Beverly was born January 1, 1921, to James and Minnie (nee Patterson) Magilton in Manly, Iowa.

A 1939 graduate of Rockford High School, she married Tilman Ivan Stangeland on November 30, 1941, in Independence, Missouri. Tilman and Betty lived on their family farm for over 50 years before retiring to Grinnell, Iowa, where they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. One of her favorite times was a trip to Ireland with Tilman, Tom & Trish Stangeland and Kay, Doug & Tim McDonald. Betty was thrilled upon finding Belfasts Witham Street where her mother Minnie lived. After Tilmans passing in 2005,
Betty found special enjoyment in her grandson Timothy McDonalds time as a student and athlete at Grinnell College. On sunny fall afternoons Betty, Tim and his friend Fernando Fonz Jenkins could be found laughing together after football games. She was a proud grandmother as she attended the Grinnell College graduation of Tim and Fonz in 2010.

In May of 2011 Betty moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she lived just minutes from Kay. They enjoyed visiting, running errands, eating ice cream at Graeter's and lunch at Frisch's. She liked celebrating holidays with family. During her three years in Ohio, these times with grandson Tim, Fonz and the family dog Conan always kept a smile on her face. Betty married into a proud Norwegian family but she was always Irish! Being outnumbered in the Quaker Norwegian community of Stavanger never diminished her Irishness. She kept Irish mementoes, celebrated St. Patricks Day and may have permitted Bushnells to touch her lips when touring the distillery in Ireland. She also embraced Stavanger, Iowa and could make kringla with the best of the Norwegians. She loved to sew and made clothing, beautiful dolls and decorative crafts which she gave to friends and family members. She was a member of Stavanger Friends Church where she taught Sunday School and served on committees. Her eyes always sparkled which belied the challenges of her life.

She and Tilman lost their first two children James Tilman and Nancy Christine to a long illness in 1956 at ages ten and seven respectively. Her brother Harry Victor was killed in the last week of the Battle of Saipan in New Guinea at the age of 29.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Tilman as well as her siblings, John and Harry Magilton, Isabel (Coffey) Olson, Frances (Coffey) Symes and James Buster Coffey.

Betty is survived by children Kay (Douglass) McDonald of Cincinnati, OH; Kevin (Judy) Stangeland of Portales, NM; Thomas (Patricia) Stangeland of Salisbury, NC, as well as her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Bettys family is thankful for the kindness and care shown to her by the staff of Arden Courts of Anderson Township, Cincinnati, OH for the past three years.

On Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Stavanger Friends Church, Marshalltown, IA, visitation will be held at 10:00 AM with funeral services following at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Stavanger Friends Church or Seeland Park Retirement Community in Grinnell, IA. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home, Marshalltown, IA.
